Artist history Bronx community became economically depressed civil rights movement. Businesses moved out… crime and drugs moved in…only the poor were left, without services and businesses…they had to find something to exist for… to give them a voice…= Voice/cultural expression for youth of that class/ minorities…not all a coincidence. Was a peaceful movement “peace, unity, love and having fun”. New artform “urban/street” expression of their (/my) reality. I grew up not so ironically like the forefathers of the dance, in where my community the youth sought out something we could all relate to and grow in/with. …Eventually moved into training seriously, =was revolutionary… as a woman… a woman of colour, pioneer of my gender Nylda Gallardo Lopez has twenty-three years dance experience. Beginning at the age of two, she was a member of the “Nueva Esperanza” Chilean folklore dance group. Nylda expanded her repertoire to include choreographing Latin contemporary, and modern Hip hop at the early age of fourteen. In 1996, she found her true passion in Bboy/girling (break dancing) and has been competing and performing ever since. Nylda has choreographed and performed with many dance companies, such as, Phem phat productions, Hard Nox Schoolers dance co, Phase 2 of Chicago Ill., and the Humber Hype of Humber College. Nylda was featured in her own half hour special on “ The New Music” (Much Music) in 1998 that highlighted female break-dancers. She also has recorded a “Much Vibe I.D”, which is a 30 second artist promotional spot that airs on Much Music and Much Vibe, and has been featured in numerous music videos. Nylda is currently the only female in the “Drunken Monkz” break dance crew, which she competes and performs with. She is one of the founders of the Drunken Monkz crew, which promotes and educates on Hip-hop culture, and the empowerment of urban youth. In the near future she hopes to open her own community center, which will provide youth with a positive outlet to fuel their energy through music and dance.
